Samsung Showcases Creaseless Foldable Screen, Hinting at Future iPhone Design

Samsung Display unveiled a prototype at CES 2026 that could redefine foldable phone design: a nearly invisible crease on the inside display. This innovation directly impacts the future of foldable devices, particularly the long-anticipated iPhone Fold, which Apple is reportedly developing in collaboration with Samsung.

The Problem with Current Foldable Screens

Existing foldable phones, while improving in durability and power, share a common flaw: a noticeable crease where the screen folds. This line detracts from the immersive experience and makes the devices feel less premium. Samsung’s new concept demonstrably eliminates this issue. The difference between the prototype and a standard foldable phone (possibly the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7) was immediately apparent, with the older device appearing outdated in comparison.

Apple’s Foldable Ambitions

Rumors of an iPhone Fold have circulated for years, and Apple is taking a cautious approach to ensure a flawless design. The primary goal is to eliminate the crease, and Samsung’s concept could be the solution. If Apple adopts this technology, it would set a new standard for foldable devices.

Durability Tested

Beyond aesthetics, the prototype also appears more robust. Samsung Display showcased this by subjecting the screens to a brutal test: a robotic arm repeatedly slammed basketballs at them. Despite the force, the screens remained undamaged, suggesting improved resistance to cracks and dents.

Beyond Phones: Automotive and Robotics

The technology extends beyond smartphones. Samsung Display also demonstrated OLED displays integrated into a vehicle dashboard, featuring a curved 18.1-inch screen for vehicle controls and a passenger display that retracts into the dashboard. The driver’s side can block the passenger’s screen to prevent distraction.

The company also showcased small educational robots with circular screens for faces. While their functionality was limited in the demo, the design captured attention.

What This Means

Samsung Display’s creaseless foldable screen is a significant step forward in display technology. Whether it will become a commercial reality remains uncertain, but the prototype’s potential impact on the foldable market is clear. If the technology makes it to production, it could be the feature that finally makes foldable phones mainstream.
