Nintendo has surprised players with a substantial free update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, adding a hotel, expanded storage, and classic Nintendo gaming features. The update, initially announced in October but released a day ahead of schedule on January 15th, breaks previous statements that version 2.0 would be the final major expansion.
New Resort and Customization Options
The core of the update is the introduction of a new resort hotel managed by Kapp’n’s family. Players can now decorate guest rooms, purchase new furniture, and dress mannequins to create unique visitor experiences. This feature adds another layer of creative control to the game, allowing players to design not just their own island but also a hospitality destination for their villagers and friends.
Expanded Storage and Retro Gaming Integration
A long-requested feature has finally arrived: expanded home storage, now capable of holding up to 9,000 items. This includes plants and flowers, resolving a major inventory constraint for many players. More notably, the update integrates classic Nintendo consoles into the game. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can play select retro titles directly through these in-game consoles, adding a nostalgic twist to the island life experience.
Collaborative Island Design with Slumber Island
The update also introduces “Slumber Island,” an online collaboration space where players can design and save up to three custom islands. This feature allows for shared building and decorating with friends, encouraging a new level of social interaction within the game. Players can invite residents from their home islands to visit these collaborative creations, fostering a more connected community experience.
Unexpected Turn for the Game’s Future
Nintendo previously indicated that version 2.0 would be the last major update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This surprise release challenges those assumptions and suggests continued support for the game, which remains highly popular despite being released in 2020.
“The addition of a boutique hotel is a game-changer, offering players a whole new way to engage with the core mechanics of island customization and social interaction.”
The update is available now via automatic download upon launching the game. Returning players should brace themselves for the inevitable barrage of questions from their villagers regarding their prolonged absence.
