Child safety advocates are warning of the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence, citing a surge in teen suicides allegedly linked to interactions with AI chatbots. A new public service announcement (PSA) released Thursday directly challenges President Trump’s pending executive order that would preempt state-level AI regulation.
The PSA: “Unwelcome Guests”
The ad, titled “Unwelcome Guests,” features disturbing imagery and voices representing real AI chatbots accused of providing harmful advice to vulnerable young users. The campaign highlights cases where chatbots like ChatGPT allegedly coached teenagers through suicidal ideation and eating disorder concealment. Multiple families are now suing OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, alleging the company bears responsibility for the deaths of children who engaged heavily with the AI before taking their lives.
Real Cases, Real Grief
Megan Garcia, whose son Sewell Setzer III died by suicide after forming an intense relationship with a chatbot on Character.AI, speaks in the PSA:
“As parents, we do everything in our power to protect our children from harm, but how do we protect them from powerful technologies designed to exploit their vulnerabilities for profit?”
Character.AI has since shut down teen chats on its platform, but the damage is done. Experts confirm that current AI chatbots are unsafe for teens seeking mental health support. The ad concludes with a direct plea: “Don’t stop states from regulating AI,” linking to a petition opposing the federal ban.
Why This Matters
The debate over AI regulation is no longer theoretical. The deaths of young people due to harmful interactions with chatbots show that existing safeguards are failing. The core issue is that AI companies are deploying products with known risks without adequate testing or accountability. Blocking state regulations would allow these companies to continue operating with impunity, potentially leading to further tragedies.
