Need help with today’s NYT Strands?
You’re in the right place. This puzzle hit a wall for a few minutes, maybe an hour, but it cracked eventually. Some words refuse to unscramble themselves. You just have to stare until your brain gives up or figures it out.
If you want hints without the fluff, read on.
March in June
That is today’s theme. Weird, right? If that clue throws you off, here is another: Month-long event.
Still stuck? Good news. The game has a fail-safe.
How to force the hints
You don’t need the big picture words to start. You need filler. Just any four-letter words. The algorithm doesn’t care about meaning, just length. Once you find three of these duds, the system unlocks the theme terms.
Here is what I used:
- LATE
- HALF
- PANT
- RANT
- THEE
- DIME
- DINE
- BEAR
- BEAT
- RIDE
Any valid word of four letters or more works. Try not to overthink it. Just grab the low-hanging fruit.
The real answers
Once the fog clears, the theme emerges. PRIDEMONTH is the spangram, the word that stretches from one side of the board to the other. Start with the P on the top left corner. It winds its way across and down like a snake in a maze.
The rest of the answers fill out the grid:
- DRAG
- FLAGS
- RALLY
- PARADE
- RAINBOW
- CELEBRATION
When every letter is connected, the board is green. That is the goal. Not just finding the words but using everything. I used to think there were always eight theme answers. I was wrong. The count varies. Keep that in mind.
When Strands gets hard
Some days are easier. Some days feel like punishment.
Dated slang? Brutal. Did you even speak lingo like PHAT in 1999? Maybe. Or maybe you just looked cool without knowing what you said.
Sea life themes are a different kind of trap. Unless you are a marine biologist, good luck. Finding BALEEN or RIGHT among the noise feels like digging for water. Or BIGEYE or SKIPJACK for those “off the hook” puzzles.
Charlie would probably fail these too. Sorry, Charlie.
Is there a strategy or is it just vocabulary luck?
Does it matter?
You’ll see. The grid resets tomorrow.
