If you already have your own web server and website, you’re halfway there. Basically, a web server is just a piece of hardware that serves content to browsers. Some people use the program from their home computer. If that’s you, all you need is a camera, software and your own machine. Simple.
Organize your own streaming
Do you need external hosting? Maybe you pay ASP? Next, we need to transfer the frames from the device to the server. Usually this is done via the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Most hosts allow this. In some cases, this may not be the case. Check the policy first.
Internet connection is important here. I want something relatively consistent. The telephone modem works if you are always connected. This means your own phone line. Cable modems are better because they are always on. Is your connection unstable? It just causes your stream to lag or go offline. Nothing is broken, but the viewer cannot see the most recent image.
Handcraft outsourcing
Don’t want to manage your server? No problem. Leave the hosting to someone else. Many webcam kits have a built-in network connection. Several use options are available.
Some use remote access via UDP protocol. This will transfer the image directly from your computer to other computers. It is very fast. It’s very direct.
You can also build your own HTTP server using their software. Anyone with a web browser can view your camera. No additional configuration is required. Alternatively, you can use the traditional FTP upload to the remote host.
This approach eliminates the need to maintain your own site. If you want to use this service and update it regularly, a stable internet connection will help. What happens if the connection is lost? The picture is just there. It’s not broken. Time has just stopped.
The simplest webcam installation requires only a camera, frame acquisition software and a hosting method.
Which method suits your skill level? Self hosting gives you control. Outsourcing saves time. Either way, the technique works. All that’s left is bandwidth and patience.
